HISTORY OF THE METTA CENTER

The Metta Center began in 2009 to serve as a massage center for authentic therapeutic massage geared towards treating your unique symptoms and challenges. The therapist spends the time to listen, inquire and discuss your needs and customize a treatment plan to support your healing. The center is run by the founder, Leah Farnsworth, and her husband, David Nix, both massage therapists and yoga instructors. This duo along with an incredible staff of massage therapists, yoga instructors and office coordinators support a space for safe healing, therapeutic massage, intentional classes and hope.

MISSION

We facilitate true, authentic pro-active healing for clients of all backgrounds utilizing a customized therapeutic approach that is based on listening, and supporting each client in the ways they need to be supported.  We facilitate each client's unique self-healing process by helping them discover and deepen their connection to their body, mind, and spirit.  Throughout all our days, we seek to lead by example, taking good care of ourselves before we attempt to care for others.

VISION

We will facilitate the creation of a thriving community of people, both clients and care providers, who care for one another, and help each another learn and grow in good health and robust spirit.  This happy, healthy community will have a ripple effect in the region releasing an ocean of metta (loving-kindness) and compassion that will improve our relationships, both with ourselves and with all others.

METTA

"Our center's name, "The Metta Center," includes the word "Metta." Metta is a Pali word often translated as "loving-kindness" or "good-will" that describes a compassionate state of mind in which we can share the good-will we extend ourselves with everyone around us. For our team, the cultivation of metta is essential in creating an environment that promotes healing, self-love, good relationships and the evaporation of stress. Although producing positive treatment outcomes is an important goal at The Metta Center, our intention of treating each client with kindness and acceptance is first and foremost.

Metta is another option, another way to respond to people, situations, events and ourselves. It is something practical we can develop and mobilize for the struggle within our own minds. Our minds are often flooded by impatience, frustration, judgment, or even worse, sadness, anger, ill will, hatred, and rage. The cultivation of Metta provides protection against these roots of suffering, and it is so much more: a haven of hope, good medicine, a reminder to be lovingly mindful, and a blessing.

Leah, the founder of The Metta Center, was introduced to the concept of Metta in her Thai Massage training, and it resonated profoundly with her. She was captivated by the training's vital emphasis on loving-kindness for oneself, and on integrating Metta meditation into one's massage practice to be an effective Thai Massage practitioner. Before, during and after each Thai Massage session, the practitioner does a Metta meditation, originating in Theravada Buddhism, to grow loving-kindness for themselves, their client, and their friends and families.

As a quality, Metta is the state in which we see others as noble beings and care for their happiness. At the Metta Center, we strive to nurture Metta within ourselves, within our team, and within our community of clients.
